Calathes still a first-round possibility

by admin

As we approach the one-week mark before the June 25 NBA Draft, Nick Calathes isn’t just sitting around spending his newly earned Euros. As expected, the former Gator guard kept his name in the pool of eligible players for the annual selection show, held at Madison Square Garden. There was talk that Calathes could pull out of the draft, making him eligible to be picked after a year or two in Greece. That rumor was squashed as the 5 p.m., Monday deadline for withdrawals passed with no … Read More »

Eagles give Ingram $1.9M birthday present

by admin

Call the caterer, we may need to upgrade Cornelius Ingram’s birthday party plans. After strong showings throughout Philadelphia’s offseason training activities, the Eagles rewarded their fifth-round pick with a four-year contract Wednesday, the same day Ingram turns 24 years old. The contract lays to rest some of the rumors reported before the draft about Ingram’s healing knee. As the former Gator continued to tumble down the draft boards, going from a possible second-round pick to the Eagles fifth-round choice, reports … Read More »

David Lee on the move?

Former Gator David Lee may have played his final game in a New York Knick uniform. According to a report in the Boston Globe (http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/articles/2009/06/07/he_feels_nba_is_within_reach/?page=3), Knicks’ general manager Donnie Walsh is hoping to deal the restricted free agent in a sign-and-trade package this summer to cut the teams salary cap number. New York has very publicly trimmed salary over the last year in hopes of freeing up enough space to sign a pair of the high-profile free agents next summer. That list … Read More »

Sha Brooks cut by Phoenix Mercury

by admin

Former Gator Sha Brooks’ path to the WNBA hit a roadblock Wednesday when she was cut by the Phoenix Mercury. Brooks logged six points and six rebounds in two combined preseason games after being the team’s third-round pick. She stuggled from the field, though, and had trouble getting in the shooting groove that made her one of Florida’s most prolific all-time scorers. The announcement came at an awkard time, as Gator coach Amanda Butler was in Phoenix to observe a few Mercury … Read More »

Mark Ellis’ near future

by admin

Oakland second baseman Mark Ellis is healing faster than anticipated from his left calf strain, but it may not be fast enough for the former Gator to retain his every-day spot in the order. Just more than three weeks since the injury, which landed him on the 60-day disabled list earlier this month, Ellis is starting to run. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, he was doing sprints at about 70 percent on Friday. His return in late June could cause a … Read More »

Greek deal improves Calathes’ NBA draft stock

by admin

Nick Calathes: The biggest thing since … Kosta Koufos? That was the word out of Greece when news broke that Calathes was foregoing the orange and blue of Florida and the green of the NBA for a contract with Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos. The deal, which seemed curious at first, starts to make sense as more details emerge. The contract, which could be worth up to $2 million a season, is on-par with what a high-lottery pick will receive in the June NBA Draft. … Read More »

Area connections in MLB Draft

by admin

The June 9-11 MLB Amateur Draft figures to yield a weaker-than-usual crop of baseball talent, but the Gainesville area should play a more prominent role in the early rounds than it has in recent years. ESPN draft analyst Keith Law has revised his list of the top-100 prospects. Topping the list is Gator pitcher Billy Bullock, ranked No. 29 overall. Bullock’s UF teammate, Matt den Dekker, rounds out of the list at No. 100. Area high school slugger, and UF commit, … Read More »

Notebook: Grossman still looking for work

by admin

Rex Grossman: Starting quarterback in the Super Bowl to … unemployed? According to Jeff Dickerson, Chicago Bears blogger for ESPNChicago.com, that could be the case (http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog?post=4165252&name=dickerson). Many forget that through the first half of the 2006 season, Grossman was a leading candidate for league MVP. He was having a record-breaking year before that Monday Night Football collapse-and-comeback against Arizona. That’s when it went downhill for No. 8. Now, as a free agent and no longer needed in Chicago after the acquisition of SEC-alum … Read More »

Calathes making a splash

by admin

Gator fans hoping for a Nick Calathes return to the O’Dome need to strap in, as this roller coaster is just getting started. Calathes was in Reseda, Calif., Monday for a workout in front of a handful of NBA scouts that also included UCLA freshman guard Jrue Holiday, Louisville forward Earl Clark and Washington big man Jon Brockman. One scout told me that Calathes was “far and away” the most impressive player on the court, showing the court vision and ability to … Read More »

Noah being Noah again

by admin

Thursday night was like old times — only with different colors, teams and arena. After three overtimes and 44 minutes on the court, there stood Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah, screaming, pounding his chest and … well … being Joakim Noah. Following the Bulls’ 128-127 triple-overtime victory to tie their first-round series with Boston at three game a piece, Noah found enough energy to make a beeline to the stands, running up and down the sideline slapping hands with every fan, going … Read More »
