Jacksonville Sharks sign former Gator Webb

by Ryan Randall

The Jacksonville Sharks, a member of the new Arena Football 1 league, have signed former Florida cornerback Dee Webb. In a press release the team said Webb will “become a cornerstone for both the defense and a veteran leader.”

This will be Webb’s second time playing for a professional team in his hometown of Jacksonville, as the All-SEC corner was a seventh-round pick of the Jaguars in 2006. Despite getting picked so late in the draft, Webb played 11 NFL games, accumulating 17 tackles and one interception that season.

In 2008 Webb signed with the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League, making 34 total tackles, deflecting five passes and forcing one fumble. The Soul would go on to defeat the San Jose Sabercats 59-56 to win ArenaBowl XXII. After his stint with the Soul, Webb made the practice squads of the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts and Calgary Stampeders.

The Jacksonville Sharks are holding open tryouts Friday for prospective players. The Sharks begin play April 3 and will face former Arena league teams such as the Orlando Predators, Tampa Bay Storm and Dallas Desperados.
