Former Gator pitcher Ryan Sadowski has landed on his feet with a chance to get back into the big leagues.
The right-hander signed a minor-league contract with the Houston Astros Dec. 8. A 13th-round draft pick in 2003, Sadowski enjoyed success in the San Francisco Giants organization last year, posting a 5-2 record with a 4.11 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 13 starts at Triple-A Fresno. In June, he was called up to San Francisco, going 2-4 with 4.45 ERA in 28 1/3 innings, at one point throwing 16 2/3 scoreless innings.
Ed Wade, general manager of the Houston Astros, said to the Houston Examiner that the pitcher would compete for the fifth spot in the Astros starting rotation. Wade also noted the low-risk, high-reward Sadowski brings with his potential.
Sadowski made his big-league debut in June 28 at Milwaukee. In six innings, he allowed four hits while striking out two batters. Sadowski’s next start, a July 3 encounter against Houston, saw the pitcher allow three hits, while striking out four batters in seven innings. However, he would lose his remaining four games and was sent to the minors Aug. 1. On Sept. 2, Sadowski was designated for assignment.
