Surveying the former Gator landscape

by admin

It’s been a week since the BCS championship, and a few days since Tim Tebow announced that he’d be back for his senior year. Now that you’ve had the opportunity to digest all of the goodness that was Gator football this season, let’s turn a little attention to what else is going on in the Gator Nation.

Lito Sheppard and Max Starks are the only former Gators still playing their NFL seasons. Pitchers and catchers aren’t ready to report to spring training and we don’t have to worry about former Gators in the NHL.

That leaves us with midseason NBA.

Raise your hand if you guessed David Lee would be the best former Gator in the league at the midway point of the season.

Come on now, be honest.

Sure, Lee is in a contract year and on a terrible team. Sure, he was spurned by new GM Donnie Walsh, who said he didn’t want to offer a contract extension to the fourth-year forward until he could gauge his real value. What’s also sure is that Lee has made himself a couple extra bucks on his next contract with his current play.

Through 36 games, Lee leads all former Gators in average points per game (14.9), rebounds per game (11.1) and is the only active player that averages a steal each contest.

But he’s not the best 3-point shooter. That honor goes to San Antonio’s Matt Bonner, who not only leads all former Gators, but leads the entire league in percentage made with at least 100 attempts. Bonner has hit on 48-of-101 3s this season (47.5 percent), which has earned him a starting spot at center for the Spurs.

During the men’s basketball team’s recent win over Longwood, a poll was conducted via text message during a timeout asking fans who should start on an All-Time UF basketball team. The choices were Neal Walk, Dwayne Schintzius or Al Horford. Not surprisingly, Horford won with about 89 percent of the vote, then went out a couple of days later and bruised his knee.

Does anyone have Schintzius’ cell number? He may be needed.

Horford is expected to miss another two games with the bruise, and is not traveling with the team on its current road trip. The time off, along with the upcoming All-Star break, may be good for Horford, who has logged a little less than 33 minutes per game in 33 games this season.

Spotted: At UF’s men’s game against Georgia Southern over the Christmas holiday, an announcement was made that “former Gator great Jason Williams” was in attendance. He sat on press row before leaving at the half, just after the announcement. I guess retirement has softened him up a bit and he’s willing to come back to Gainesville. The Gator great part … that’s debatable.

Meet and greet: Former Gator Andew DeClercq will be back in Gainesville Thursday at the Alltel retail store at 3626 S.W. Archer Rd. from 5-7 p.m.

During the event, DeClercq will be taking pictures with fans, signing autographs and helping to lead a contest that will give away tickets to Saturday’s UF men’s game against Arkansas.

Got a former Gator that you’re wondering about or a current Gator in the pros that you want me to catch up with? Drop me an email and let me know. I’ll do my best to get all of the info you’re looking for. I’m already in the process of catching up with a few players that have been requested by fans.
